Ludhiana: In a major relief to Ludhiana police, 2575 new posts were sanctioned in Ludhiana police commissionerate. The new posts include one Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), five Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), 17 Inspectors, 45 Sub Inspectors, 151 Assistant Sub Inspectors, 724 Constables and 1633 SPOs.
The cops will be deputed on the new posts shortly by the state government.
Earlier, there were 4437 posts in Ludhiana Police Commissionerate and the shortage of manpower was badly affecting the functioning of the police as the numbers of police personnel were very less according to the population of the district. Moreover, the rural areas also falls under the jurisdiction of Police Commissionerate but the patrolling was very less. After the Commissionerate system came into existence the clerical work was shifted to the police from general administration which was also a burden for the police.
Now, the number of posts in Ludhiana Police Commissionerate will be 7013 with the sanctioning of the new posts.
Commissioner of Police Jatinder Singh Aulakh said that fifty percent of the newly sanctioned posts will be filled shortly and rest will be filled in next six months. It will be decided later that the how many police personnel will be deputed in police stations, for clerical work or at other duties.
Sources in the police told that one ACP rank official would head licensing unit of Police Commissionerate.
The heavy shortage of staff in Police Department has led to rise in crime and affected other activities. Several times the Municipal Corporation encroachment drives were failed due to non-availability of the police personnel to assist MC teams.

Earlier, the police personnel were over burdened with work but with the sanction of new posts the functioning of the police will become smoother. The department was facing acute shortage of constables but now with adding of more police personnel the crime rate will be decreased and also the public dealing will become more effective.”
