Bathinda: Amid protests across the state, Sangrur MP of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday skipped his public meetings scheduled for Sangat Mandi in Bathinda and Muktsar.
Mann is facing ire of the people belonging to below poverty line (BPL) category following his objectionable remarks against them, in which he had allegedly compared them with beggars by stating that the “blue cards” which they get from government for subsidised items were “Beggars’ Cards”. His remarks evoked massive agitations across the state and at many places people lodged their protest by burning his effigy. The same way, people from SC/ST communities at Sangat Mandi were all set to demonstrate with black flags during Mann’s visit to their area.
On the other hand, people who were willing to hear Mann were also assembled in large numbers. Having information about the tension, police were stationed in the town. Despite, there was sloganeering against Mann in the town which forced the AAP volunteers to inform him about the tension. Later, it was learnt that the agitating people were led by four of the SAD circle jathedars and they were adamant for not allowing Mann to hold rally in the town. Finally, Mann had to cancel his programme and the masses assembled to listen to him had to return disappointed.
Meanwhile, when media persons questioned the party’s women wing president Baljinder Kaur, who is now a party candidate from Talwandi Sabo constituency, feigned ignorance of the reason for Mann’s not turning up. Meanwhile, similar reports also landed from Muktsar district as Mann also didn’t reach there to address the rallies scheduled for the day.
As Mann, who is the party’s election campaign committee in-charge, didn’t reach the venue, some other party leaders had to inaugurate the party’s Bathinda (rural) candidate Rupinder Kaur Ruby’s election office.
