Ludhiana: City residents are continuously subjected to inconvenience due to the blockage caused by religious, cultural and social functions that are organised on streets and roads in the city as now, these are days when mostb of the functions take place.
Several events are organised on main roads of the city on regular-basis but Municipal Corporation (MC) has so far turned a blind eye towards the problems of commuters.
Even as there is a strict law against blocking roads and intersections under the Punjab Municipal Act and any such violation is treated as a cognizable offence. But, violations continue unabated in the absence of action on the part of civic officials.
Heavily decorated function sites with huge gatherings create ruckus for the commuters, as the venue for these functions are roads and streets. Owing to this, commuters are forced to take long alternative routes to reach their destinations.
Many times, residents are in hurry to reach at a particular place, but these blockades stuck them due to which residents and commuters are a harried lot.
Some of the residents also claimed that whenever a function or event takes place, the venue and roads nearby remain littered for days. They say that organisers should at least clear the trash after holding the function.
Residents and commuters have appealed to the officials that all event organisers should take permission before organising the event. Moreover, officials should not allow anyone to block the road as this is against law.
This is a major issue in the city as several events are being organised regularly in the city due to which commuters have to face many problems. Many times travelers have to face several problems as they are not aware about these functions. Authorities should take required steps to curb this menace going rampant in the city.
Jasleen Singh city resident said, “People have to choose alternative ways to reach their destination in such situation. This is a common problem in city as people block roads for personal functions and that too without taking any permission. Officials should challan these violators”.
Gaganpreet Singh another city resident said, “People have to choose alternative ways to reach their destination in such situation.
