Jalandhar: The first day of “Mela Gadri Babeyan Da” at Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall on Monday was mainly for the children as song, quiz and painting competitions for school children were held. The sole purpose was to connect them with the Independence movement of the country as subject for the competitions was ‘Patriotism’. The mela started twenty five years back in the memory of the Gadri Lehar established in 1913 will last for three days.
This year is the silver jubilee year of the mela and this year mela is turning little controversial also as Kanhayiya and other JNU students have been called especially by the organisers to address the gathering. Some organisations are expected to protest outside Desh Bhagat Hall but organisers did not seem much concerned with the protest.
Comrade Gurmeet Singh,General Secretary of the Yadgar Committee told media persons that the committee promotes culture and patriotism through patriotic songs, poems, paintings, plays and books. “Kanhaiya will be here on Tuesday to address the public here and we have asked the administration for security inside and outside the hall. Many more will also address as always,” said Com Gurmeet.
The ‘Book Fair’ is always an essential part of the Gadri Mela as public reaches here to buy books written about Gadri Lehar, Rani Lakshami Bai, Shaheed Bhagat Singh and other martyrs who laid down their lives for sake of independence of our country. “We bring books here which people don’t usually get from the book stores. Sometimes people ask us to find some particular book and bring it next year and surprisingly they reach here next year also to ask about that book. Parents buy patriotic books for their children,” Manjit Lal,bookseller said.
National News Channels have Gadri Mela in their focus on Tuesday especially because of expected arrival of Kanhaiya as they are expecting something unexpected.
