Patiala: Known as the strong hold of Punjab Congress Chief, Capt Amarinder Singh, Patiala comprises of eight assembly constituencies out of which two are reserved for the Scheduled Castes. These include, Patiala (Urban), Patiala (Rural), Nabha (Reserve), Shutrana (Reserve), Samana, Sanour, Ghanour and Rajpura.
So far five seats are with Congress and three are with the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal. The Congress is having Patiala (Urban), Patiala (Rural), Nabha (Reserve) , Sanour and Rajpura assembly seats. SAD is having Samana, Shutrana (Reserve) and the Ghanour seat.
During Parliamentary elections in 2014 this district witnessed a political miracle when a common man from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Dr Dharam Vera Gandhi gave the royal family a tough time and defeated the three time MP Preneet Kaur.
After the defeat ruling Shiromani Akali Dal also tried to make a dent in the Capt. Amarinder Singh’s bastion and nursed the constituency through the developmental works. But still it’s not easy to gauge the mood of the electorate as the congress Party is yet announce its candidates for the forthcoming assembly elections. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), AAP and Apna Punjab Party have announced their candidates taking lead.
It may not be fair to comment on the prospects of any of the political Parties till the Congress announced its candidates. All the parties have faced the inner rebellion as political equations changed from time to time.
After having talked to the electorate at length but the majority gave the same remarks that first of all the political parties must come forward with their candidates and then only can be said about the elections.
These people said that so far no other political party has announced its candidate for the Patiala (Urban) assembly seat and its very much clear that Punjab Congress Chief, Capt. Amarinder Singh will contest his last assembly election from this seat. Earlier this seat was with his wife, Preneet Kaur. But other political parties are in dilemma over the selection of their candidates from this seat and question is how will they contest against Capt. Amarinder Singh?
In Patiala (Rural) assembly seat AAP put Karanbir Singh Tiwana as its candidate and SAD also gave party ticket to a young advocate Satbir Singh Khatra. Congress is yet to announce its candidate. Earlier, the seat was won by Brahm Mohindra and he was again in fray to get the party ticket. The fight will become clear only after the Congress declared its candidates.
In Nabha (reserve) Congress’ Sadhu Singh Dharmsot is the sitting MLA and AAP announced Dev Mann as its candidate and SAD announced kabir Dass, who joined SAD recently after leaving the Congress Party, but SAD candidate is facing a very tough challenge from within the party. Nabha is also known as a strong hold of the Congress. But again the final picture will become clear only after the announcement of the congress’ candidate.
In Samana assembly seat SAD’s Surjit Singh Rakhra seems to be in a driving seat as he has worked hard to nurture the constituency. AAP has given its ticket to Jagtar Singh Rajala but he looks as not a big challenge for Rakhra. The Congress Party though received a panel of four aspirants for this seat but none of the candidate seemed in a position to pose a big challenge to Rakhra.
In Shutrana (Reserve) seat the SAD has retained its candidate Vaninder Kaur Loomba and AAP has given ticket to Palwinder Kaur. Congress’ list is awaited.
In Sanour Assembly seat senior Congress leader Laal Singh is lined up to contest from the seat for the record ninth time. His name has not been declared but SAD has tried to corner him with a young leader Harinder Singh Chandumajra, son of senior Akali leader MP, Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra. AAP has come forward with the Daughter of the former SGPC Chief Late Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra , Kuldeep Kaur Tohra, who joined hands with AAP and has been fielded from Sanour. The fight here seems mainly between SAD and the Congress Party. Both Laal Singh and Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra are known for their shrewd political tactics.
Where as in Ghanour assembly seat SAD has retained its candidate Harpreet Kaur Mukhmailpur and AAP has fielded Anu Randhawa , daughter of former Congress Leader late Jasjit Singh Randhawa.
As far as Rajpura is concerned earlier it was considered to be a safe seat for the congress. Hardyal Singh Kamboj got elected from here last time but in present political scenario the situation looks
