Hoshiarpur: The National level Special Olympic Games was all set to begin at Rayat Bahra Institute, Hoshiarpur from Sunday. The games would conclude on November 16.
A first ever Unified Sports Programme, the sports meet would feature games like Football, Badminton and Table Tennis. Division-wise, preliminary rounds and competitions across all three sport disciplines.
In a press release, it was stated that as many as 18 States have sent a team each to participate in the event. The Opening ceremony would be held on November 13. Gurvinder Singh Bahra Chairman, Rayat Bahra Group of Institutes would be the chief guest on this occasion. A demo of ‘Young Athlete Programme’ would also be held during the sports meet.
The YAP is an early intervention program targeting children with intellectual disabilities aged between two to eight to improve their motor skills and also preparing them for participation in the larger sports program.
Vijay Sampla, Union Minister of State Social Justice and Empowerment would inaugurate the Special Olympics Healthy Athlete Program on 14 November 2016.
Four Regional (Asia Pacific Region) Clinical Advisors, from India, Slovania, Malaysia and Germany would also carry out their training. Thirty doctors from all over India would be participating in training sessions, to get oriented with the Special Olympics Programme so that they could screen persons with Intellectual Disabilities.
The Special Olympics Program focuses on the power of the youth for educating, recognising and motivating others to join the movement, a daylong session on Youth Activation will be held on 15 November with 20 Youth leaders and 10 Athletes.
