Nawanshahr: The contest is expected to be pretty tough on Nawanshahr seat where except for congress the three other major parties, AAP, SAD and BSP have announced their candidates. While AAP has fielded former congress MLA and MP Charanjit Singh Channi, SAD has given the ticket to its halqa in-charge Jarnail Singh Wahid and BSP to Nachhattar Pal. Congress’ ticket is likely to go to youth leader Angad Singh, son of sitting MLA Guriqbal Kaur Babbli who is reported to have decided to pass the baton on to her son. Angad’s father late Parkash Singh Saini had represented the constituency from 2007 to 2012.
In Banga, both Congress and BSP are yet to announce their nominees while AAP has fielded Harjot Kaur and SAD has nominated Dr Sukhvinder Kumar Sukhi for the seat. Congress ticket is likely to be given to sitting MLA Tarlochan Singh Soond.
In Balachaur constituency, Brig (retd) Raj Kumar will contest the seat from AAP’s side while sitting SAD MLA Chaudhary Nand Lal has again been given the ticket for the fifth consecutive term. Chaudhary Nand Lal has been representing the seat for the past four terms. Both congress and BSP are yet to announce their candidates with speculation that BSP could field a Jat candidate for the seat.
Congress is highly faction-ridden in the constituency and the nomination of the candidate would be keenly watched. As many as seven persons have reportedly applied for the ticket, as per party sources.
In Nawanshahr too, the congress party, which has otherwise a strong hold, has two factions-one led by the prospective candidate Angad Singh and the other led by district president Satvir Singh Palli Jhikki.
The contest here is expected to be photo-finish as all the four parties have a very strong presence here. There is apparently no faction in Banga and the sitting MLA Tarlochan Singh is lone aspirant for the party ticket, though some under-currents of opposition could not be ruled out.
