Ludhiana: In this 21 century, where almost every child is celebrating the childrens’ day with full craze and enthusiasm, at the same time, there are so many kids who are not even aware of their rights and not celebrating childrens’ day and keeping themselves busy in doing labour. While the children of upper class people are celebrating this day by going out and by getting gifts from their parents and teachers.
Each and every Indian must remember the words of Jawahar Lal Nehru, who said that every child on November 14 will celebrate the day with full enthusiasm and excitement. But there are still many children in India who do not even know the worth of November 14 because ofbeing deprived of education. They don’t even know who Jawahar Lal Nehru was and why November 14 is celebrated as Childrens’ day.
Children always deserve better, as they are the future of our country. Not only on November 14, should children get their rights but forever by not putting them in child labour and by educating them according to their wish.
At least, 600 child laborers from different industrial units especially garment and hosiery industry have been rescued by the district task force committee for child labor during the past four years in which many departments work together. But even then the menace of child labour is not being controlled as thousands of child labor is suspected to be working in the industrial units.
Despite the fact that police and other authorities could take a suo-motto action against those employing child labor, no action is taken without a complaint by NGOs or social organisations. An NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan that is a part of district action committee has repeatedly asked the authorities to give attention to the menace of the child labor.
In a reality check, Daily Post Correspondent visited restaurants in different areas of the city where many children below the age group of 15-16 were working. A market with several eateries on Ferozepur Road at Aggar Nagar near Raghunath Temple has made severe violations by employing more than 15 children by different eateries.
Labor department has not been able to assess the total number of workers in different industrial units in Ludhiana. There is an estimated 13 lakh migrant workers in Ludhiana, but most of them are not registered with the labor department. On the other hand, the data of child labor is not available with the department.
We are hoping a better India for the budding generation, where evils like child labour will not happen anymore and the dream of Jawahar Lal Nehru will come true.
