Ludhiana: Despite the fact, it is compulsory at the public places to make the ramps for the physically challenged by Center Government movement but Ludhiana Railway Station does not have any ramps at local railway station mainly at the rear of the station from where the maximum passengers visit the station.
But the Ludhiana Railway Station authorities seem to forget to make any provision for comfortable movement of physically challenged and elderly people. To make the authorities recall this, ten NGO’s of Ludhiana working in field of disability went to celebrate International Day of persons with disabilities so that they can practically see the problem of these disabled people in taking the train.
It is pertinent to mention that government has made mandatory that there should be ramp in every public department and place for the physically challenged or authorities would be fine. But there is no one to check and see the non- construction of ramps at the Ludhiana Railway Station and fine them for it. Such passengers are forced to cross tracks through carrier pathway, putting their lives at risk. Railway authorities have failed to provide facilities to the physically challenged and elderly as foot over bridges sans ramps. A large number of passengers, who are not able to move without a wheelchair, daily, visit the railway station. Their attendants have a tough time shifting them from one platform to another on the daily basis at station.
Gurmeet Singh, a visitor to the railway station, said, “As there was no ramp at the station, we had a tough time shifting my brother Harjinder, who is unable to walk because of her badly swollen knees. One has to pick her in lap and other person.”
“Last time, we missed train as we were unable to make it to platform number five from one due to this problem only in rush. The railway authorities should construct separate bridges for physically challenged and elderly”, he added further.
A physically challenged, Rajinder Singh said, “Whenever I have to travel by train, my elder brother picks me up in his lap and take me across bridge. The railways should seriously think about this issue as it’s the daily problem being faced by us.”
Even the newly made bridge has not been designed to provide ramp on one side with stairs. The height of new bridge is even more than old bridge on which the handicapped use to manage to go, but on the new bridge they fail to step even few steps of the stairs. Now they have to go to board train through railway station platform number one only at Ludhiana Railway Station.
The railways must adopt the better designs of the bridges, as there are around 50 stairs in new bridge which even a normal passenger feel difficult to step up with their luggage. As the maximum passengers these days have rolling suitcases and they lift up their luggage themselves only so a ramp is a must at the railway station.
