Ludhiana: Not only bullock cart racing is being missed by spectators, another major sport six side hockey was not played due to damaged astro-turf in Kila Raipur games Kila Raipur at the 81 edition of Kila Raipur Sports Festival. Players are requesting to the authorities to provide astro-turf so that players would practice more and join more for hockey.
However, 12 years earlier, sports department has provided the used astro-turf which is now installed for six line hockey but of no use. The astro-turf is totally damaged; many bubbles and gaps have been there in the astro-turf which is very dangerous for the players to play at that particular astro-turf.
Seven years ago, state government promised to provide six sides Astro-Turf hockey ground at different villages in city but old Astro-Turf was provided to three villages. Sports promoters claimed only verbal promises are made by state government on promotion of sports.
However, Bhagwant Memorial Gold Cup Hockey is being organised during this festival but the six-a-side hockey which is popular especially among the budding players is missing. The astro-turf has got torn from different places but it could not be replaced till date. The ground for six-a-side hockey is smaller than field hockey ground (11 a-side).
Importantly, games started at Kila Raipur in year 1933 as games are very popular at this village and hockey started from year 1950. Though, government is least interested to provide the single astro-turf for the players.
Manpreet Singh, player and resident of Kila Raipur said, “The available Astro-Turf ground is not in good condition due to which many of the players also get injuries. Government should promote sports not verbally but by spending money on the infrastructure. However, large number of politicians came and promised for providing the good sports infrastructure but not provided the same”.
Meanwhile, the water tank is also installed by pooling the money by the players near the ground which is shame on the part of government and sports department. The prominent sports ground is lacking of several basic facilities and poor infrastructure.
District Education Officer Kartar Singh said, “The promised astro-turfs have not provided by the department and department will soon send the turf so that players would not suffer from any injury”.
