AAP announces to hold protest dharna over the issue on Thursday
Patiala: The ongoing protest on the banks of the Bhakra Main Line (BML) canal on Patiala-Nabha road was foiled here on Wednesday when the president of the striking nurses, Karamjit Kaur Aulakh took an extreme step and committed an attempt to suicide by jumping into the gushing waters from the iron bridge of the canal. The president along with three striking nurses were sitting on the bridge since 2.30 pm Tuesday onwards. As soon as Karamjit Kaur jumped into the canal, she was chased by the divers standing near and took her out from the canal, whereas other three members of the suicide squad fail to jump and later were taken into custody from the bridge.
This caused resentment among the fellow nurses who eventually started agitating and started pushing the police deployed on the spot. They tried to obstruct the traffic and blockade the Patiala-Nabha road as well.
The agitating nurses tried to misbehave with the SDM Pooja Syal and the DSP Krishan Kumar Panthai but the police on the orders of the DSP Panthai swooped over them and took them all in the police custody.
The police also took the president of the agitating nurses staff Karamjit Kaur Aulakh to the government Rajindra Hospital in an ambulance , where she was admitted and her medical treatment was started and her condition was said to be stable and under control. The doctors attending her said that they were keeping vigil over the condition of Karamjit Kaur Aulakh and monitoring her health as well. Earlier Karamjit Kaur Aulakh threatens to jump into the canal at 11 am along with her other three associates later which was postponed to 2 pm as the SDM reached there and started parleys with them and assured them that something will be done regarding their demands by 2 pm as she was in touch with the high officials at Chandigarh but it fails to materialise because of the holiday in the state on the account of birth anniversary of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha and after 2 pm Aulakh jumps into the canal.
Not only SDM but DSP Krishan Kumar Panthai and DRME Dr Manjit Kaur Mohi also tried to pursue the agitating nurses over this matter but in vain as they were adamant to get some thing concrete from the State government.
