Sleepover dharna-happy Congress
It seems like the state Congress has gone into dharna mode as the recent ‘chitta Ravana’ sleepover and the earlier state assembly sleepover protests indicate. During this past week’s sleepover dharna outside Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s residence, a senior Cabinet minister was heard quipping that Congress seems to have taken a page out of Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal’s playbook of just itching to stage a dharna on any issue.
Congress resorts to loyalty vows
To put an end to bickering among Congress ticket-seekers, the party has begun taking aspirants to shrines or religious places to swear that they would back the party candidate and not work against the person. Having tasted bitter in the past, the Congress leadership is this time quite afraid of the menace of rebels. For it being a national party, where the decisions of state matters are taken at national capital, the party leaders are in a race to show themselves bigger and stronger than others on almost every assembly segment seat, which is causing rift within the party. Recently, two factions of the Congress workers at Talwandi Sabo not only assaulted each other with sticks and bruises but also opened fire during the CLP leader Charanjit Singh Channi’s Cycle Yatra. Once realising that it was all a display of ongoing tussle between two groups for the ticket, Channi took the leaders of both groups to Gurdwara and made them swear in the name of God to maintain peace. In a yet another instance, 21 ticket-seekers from Ropar constituency were also taken to shrine of Peer Baba Zinda Shaheed at Nurpur Bedi in Ropar the next day to swear in that they would back the party candidate to the hilt.
Welcome change in Kangra valley
It was nice to see the other day that Kangra valley has started rejuvenating with a flurry of activities, and it is the resultant impact of increased vehicular traffic on roads, with increased inflow of tourists, especially foreigners, going up the hills towards Dharamshala. Smartly dressed traffic police have extra job to regulate the increased flow of human beings, especially heading to the booked space in the jam-packed hotels in view of the India-New Zealand match at the beautiful HPCA Cricket Stadium. Daily three flights to New Delhi from Kangra airport amidst rising against azure sky like a speck against the Dhauladhar hills gives an indication of change in the lifestyle of people.
Paddy procurement season: Photograph time for political leaders
Farmers are taking their crop of paddy to mandis as the season of paddy procurement has begun and they are staying back in the mandis to sell off their produce. These farmers are compelled to face some kind of hardships in the mandis during this time. In some mandis, the procurement has failed to take off due to various reasons, whereas in some other mandis there is a problem of lifting of the procured paddy. On the other hand, this is the right time for political leaders from the treasury as well as opposition to get their photos clicked in these mandis not meant for the poor farmers but for their own political goals. While the ruling party leaders want to take the credit of the timely procurement of the paddy produce, on the flip side the leaders belonging to the Opposition are also not letting any opportunity go by in which they can criticise the government and settle their own political scores while also getting maximum political mileage out of it.
Decks cleared for merger of State Bank of Patiala with State Bank of India
The decks have been cleared for the merger of the famous State Bank of Patiala with the State Bank of India and with this move now, the Royal City of Patiala is also going to lose its sheen. As once started with the efforts of the Royal Family of Patiala, this bank has become an icon for Patiala people as it spread the name of this Royal city in the nation. Though during earlier stages not only the members of the royal family assured to resist the move concerning the merger but when the Union government especially the Union Cabinet approved of it, then all such efforts were shelved. This comes as a big jolt for the Patialvis and a loss as well, as it seemed they are going to lose their own name at national as well as at the international level.
Get customised Lassi on Jalandhar-Kapurthala road!!
A hoarding put on the yet-to-be-constructed Jalandhar-Kapurthala road by Punjab government has been garnering much attention among the residents. As it is a bumpy ride on this highly busy stretch, hapless shopkeepers have put up a hoarding making fun of the poor condition of the dug up stretch. The hoarding read: “Bring your curd and a glass of water along and hang it on your vehicle. Commute on Jalandhar-Kapurthala road and witness the magic. Your customised lassi will be made! All thanks to the bumpy ride on this stretch.” While the hoarding was already getting attention, shopkeepers and Opposition leaders have been circulating it on social media too.
SAD’s Jalandhar Cantonment seat has many lovers!
Even as the SAD is yet to zero in on a candidate for its crucial Jalandhar Cantonment seat, a tough war of hoardings has already started in this belt. While YAD Doaba Zone chief Sarabjot Singh Sabi was the first official SAD leader to make a foray in this segment, the new entrant is UK-based NRI Jaspal Singh Dhesi – brother of Paramjit Singh Raipur. Not only Raipur was making his presence felt, he has also got hoardings of his brother put up at key intersections of the city. Sabi’s hoardings were dotting Jalandhar Cantonment, Raipur has reached out to some of the major intersections of city too.
Khattar’s discipline mantra
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar is said to be not so happy with a section of senior party leaders including many MLAs. He is flooded with complaints from bureaucrats regarding their ‘rude’ behaviour, following which Khattar is believed to have conveyed his displeasure to party colleagues through different channels. He has told them to be disciplined and pitch for only those works which are going to help the people and the party in the polls. He has told them to refrain from coming to ministers or bureaucrats with any kind of requests regarding transfer and posting, but in vain. Most of the party workers’ requests are about transfers and posting of their near and dear, which is really giving tough time to Chief Minister Khattar.
Anil Vij’s ‘problem’
Haryana Health and Sports Minister Anil Vij is known for his no-nonsense approach. He rarely shows any qualms in taking on his ministerial colleagues or bureaucrats when he has to point out any wrong taking place due to their acts of omission or commission. He loves recommending the suspension of erring officers and puts forth his views on any issues bluntly. Many of his party colleagues take him as a ‘problem boy’ for the BJP but Vij is unfazed.
Political Astrology: Rahul with Mangal, Sukhbir with Shani
In a three-day fair of astrologers in Chandigarh last week, the astrologers from different states participated. The prime issue of the debate zeroed in on the political scenario of Punjab and opinions were landed with different versions favouring different political leaders. Later, the astrologers prepared the kundlis of the party chiefs based on their date of birth and other personals details. However, it was witnessed that following the kundli lines, the astrologers made predictions who is having Raj Yog for 2017 assembly elections. During the discussion, it has been divulged that Capt Amarinder Singh is having Mangal in his Kundli, whereas Sukhbir is suffering from Shani Gharh and Navjot Singh Sidhu’s controversial stars contribute to Congress and help him to grab the chair of CM of Punjab. After reading Sukhbir and Parkash Singh Badal’s kundlis, the astrologers said that senior Badal is having potential to be CM of Punjab thrice, whereas Sukhbir’s stars were not leading towards the victory in the upcoming elections. The astrologers also dragged national faces of the political parties including Rahul Gandhi’s every effort turning flipside due to his Mangal Ghrah. Further, the astrologers predicted Modi carrying on strongly with seemingly unbeatable stars that may impact Punjab elections resulting victory of SAD-BJP.
