Kapurthala: In a shocking incident that took place on Monday night in Dainwind village of Kapurthala, an old man was allegedly beaten to death by some influential people of the same village. Kapurthala police registered an FIR on Tuesday afternoon after the villagers blocked Sultanpur Road in the morning. As many as 12 persons have been booked in the murder case in Kotwali Police Station. The deceased Baba Manjit Singh was the caretaker of a Mazaar outside the village and Pritam Singh, an influential person of the village, wanted control of the Mazaar himself. According to Ranjit Singh, the brother of the deceased, Baba Manjit Singh was caretaker of the Mazaar which was built on a Wakf Board land on lease.
Pritam Singh and others wanted the possession of that land and they threatened Baba with dire consequences if he didn’t vacate the land, but Baba was adamant on remaining there. On Monday night, Pritam Singh and his accomplices attacked Baba and beat him to death. They took forcible possession of the Mazaar after killing Baba Manjit Singh. “We informed the police and gave them a written complaint but the police tried to help the accused,” Ranjit Singh said.
