Ludhiana: Multitudes of enthusiastic farmers and rural women thronged the opening day of two-day Kisan Mela at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The verve and vigour of the farmers from across Punjab and adjoining states was indeed heartening. V.P. Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Chancellor of the University, was the chief guest while Jathedar Tota Singh, Minister of Agriculture and NRI Affairs, Punjab was the guest of honour. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU accorded a warm welcome to the dignitaries.
Besides, M.P. Singh, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Dr N.S. Kalsi, Additional Chief Secretary (Development), Punjab and Dr G.S. Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU also graced the occasion.
In his inaugural address, Badnore said, “The research contributions of PAU have benefited not only the farmers and Punjab state but also the entire country, which relied on USA for food crop supplies after Independence.”
In his remarks, Jathedar Tota Singh expressed concern over the plight of the farmers due to prevailing marketing system, leading to more expenses and less income. “More than half of the Indian population is dependent on agriculture for livelihood,” he said, while revealing the desperate condition of farmers of other states like Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier, Dr Dhillon welcomed the chief guest, guest of honour, officials from Punjab Government, farmers, rural women and the PAU scientists. About Badnore, Dr Dhillon said, “Being a farmer, he has made significant social and environmental contributions to the society.”
The chief guest felicitated five farmers namely Amarjit Singh of village Bahiram Sahista, district Jalandhar and Hakam Singh of village Mahila, district Sangrur with “Parwasi Bharti Award 2016;” Chetan Verma of village Sahowal, district Gurdaspur with “Sardar Surjit Singh Dhillon Award 2016;” Rajmohan Singh Kaleka of village Bishanpur Channa, district Patiala with “Sardar Dalip Singh Dhaliwal Memorial Award 2016” and Vinod Kumari of village Mayel, tehsil Garhshankar, district Hoshiarpur with “State Awardee Sardarni Jagbir Kaur Memorial Award 2016.”
