Ludhiana: Acting tough on drunken driving, the city police have recommended the cancellation of driving licenses of 649 persons caught by Traffic Police from April 1 to September 18 this year.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Dhruman Nimbale has shot off a letter to District Transport Officer (DTO) recommending the cancellation of driving licenses of 649 violators caught for drunken driving.
Earlier also, the traffic police have recommended the cancellation of 81 driving licenses of habitual traffic offenders. However, only few were cancelled.
DCP said that it has come to light that the majority of the accidents took place due to drunken driving. Moreover, the drunkards also create brawls on the roads.
Taking a strict action, the recommendations of cancellation of 649 driving licenses has been made. These 649 offenders were caught by Traffic Police at special check points installed between 8 pm to 2 am.
It is pertinent to mention here that Ludhiana is the first district in the state to take strict action against the traffic violators by recommending the cancellation of their driving license.
Last year, the Delhi Police had also recommended cancellation of driving license of 15 city residents who were found violating traffic rules in National Capital. The Delhi Police had recommended cancellation after the persons were found violating the rules regularly despite issuing challans.
Traffic expert, Rahul Verma welcomed the strict action taken by city police. He said that the police and Transport Department should hold a meeting with judicial officers and set guidelines to cancel the driving license on the spot.
He said after the challan, the police have to recommend cancellation and Transport Department has to call the offenders. It would be easy if the license would be cancelled in the court only when the offender comes to pay fine.
