Jagraon: Jagraon police received a major breakthrough in the killing of Youth Congress activist around two months back when it arrested another accused wanted to the police in the murder case. The accused arrested by the police has been identified as Simrenjit Singh alias Sonu of Kothe Khajuran village near Jagraon. Simranjit Singh is the second accused arrested by the police in this case.
Earlier, the police had arrested Balwinder Singh alias Lakha of Galib Kalan village, a day after the shooting incident during which the Youth Congress activist was shot dead. In all, the Jagraon police had registered a case against 11 persons including Simranjit Singh, Balwinder Singh Lakha, Gurwinder Singh, Inderjit Singh and seven unidentified persons in this regard. While Simranjit Singh and Balwinder Singh Lakha have been arrested, remaining 9 accused are still at large.
It is reminded here that Youth Congress activist Hardeep Singh Sekhon alias Patwari (26), a resident of Kaunke Kalan village near Jagraon was allegedly shot dead by the members of a rival gang during the shootout between two groups at New Grain Market of Jagraon on the night of April 6 when the victim along with his brother Jagdeep Singh and Jagraon Youth Congress President Harman Galib was returning to Jagraon from Bagha Purana. Hardeep Singh died on the spot whereas his brother Jagdeep Singh and Jagraon Youth Congress President Harman Galib escaped unhurt.
SSP Jagraon Opinderjit Singh Ghuman confirmed the development. “The accused was arrested from Jagera village near Mandi Ahemdghar by a police team led by SHO Jaswinder Singh following a tip off. The remaining accused in the case would also be behind bars very soon,” said the SSP.
