Chandigarh: Learning a Foreign Language (FL), in addition to academic qualifications, have many advantages nowadays. Learning a second language is exciting and beneficial for all age groups. Among others, it offers several practical, intellectual and inspirational benefits. Over the past two decades, the world has shrunk, nations have become more and more interdependent and new technologies have blurred existing borders. As old paradigms become redundant, Foreign Language instruction (FLl) has become more necessary than ever for linking one with the rest of the world and for producing an enlightened citizenship which is capable of functioning in today’s ever-shrinking world.
Daily Post Correspondent Prabhmeet Luthra had a series of questions with Vishavdeep, (Assistant Registrar) IKG-PTU Foreign Languages Center, Mohali over the role and scope of foreign language in today’s world.
Q: Which foreign languages are in demand from a career perspective in India?
A: Every foreign language has its own advantage. English is the official language of 58 countries around the globe. Even though the languages that are presently in demand are Japanese, German, French, Chinese and Spanish etc. German and French are comparatively easier than the rest of languages.
Q. What are the career prospects after learning a foreign language in technical industry?
A: Multinational Companies such as HP, oracle, Samsung, Hyundai, LG, Thomson etc are employing language experts. Other job opportunities for a language specialist in technical industry are in airline offices and radio stations etc. Traditional graduates in foreign languages do not have knowledge technical vocabulary. But an engineer having knowledge of a foreign language can better serve in technical translation sector.
Q. Please share some life experiences related to foreign language learning?
A. l spent almost 3 Years in South Korea. Until I learnt Korean, 1 could not understand Korean culture, psychology of its people and their lifestyle in depth. l started teaching English in university of Seoul because I know both Korean and English. lots of the immigrants their knew either, but not both languages. I started taking private tuitions. It strengthened my financial position also.
Q. Are e-lectures, e-books and internet helpful in learning a foreign language? Why should an individual learn a foreign language when Google is providing a translator tool which is available for free on internet?
A. e-lectures and e-books have lack that is problem solving aspect. Language is not learnt merely by books. There are several techniques included altogether, which we use in IKG Class rooms. As far as Google translation tool is concerned, I can confidently say that, translated version created by this tool is almost bizarre. Actual meaning is far from the translated one. Human Intelligence is essential for translation. Because of understanding and expressing actual and implied meanings, idioms and phrases, connotations, punctuation rules and usage of local Words etc.
Q: Is there any scopes for translators in foreign languages?
A. 42% course in a foreign language opens doors to a career in translation. Today, translators are required in almost every sphere. We need translators to translate the code and technicality of machinery. Several German companies are looking for people who can translate their technical knowhow and product catalogues into languages that their prospects can understand.
Q: What l K G Punjab Technical University offers?
