Ludhiana: A huge craze for ‘foreign cows’ was seen among the farmers during the second day of Pashu Palan mela of GADVASU. The craze of having foreign cows in the farmers is growing fast due to the high quantity of milk production from these cows as the local cows are not so productive as compare to the these cows. The normal local cow gives 7-8 liters of milk in a day and the imported cow give 15-20 liters means double from the normal.
The life span of these cows is also more than the local cows. Mostly the life span depends on the care of the cow, the more people take care of them and the more they live. The cost of buying these imported cows is double than the local cows. But farmers’ motive is to earn more profit as they have to invest one time upon these imported cows.
During visit to Kisan Mela held at Punjab Agriculture University, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Sciences University (GADVASU) department had displayed their seeds, cows and buffaloes among others for selling. But, foreign cow selling is seen more than the local cows. Different breeds of cows were there in the mela like Shahiwal, Gahir and Jabranvadi are the local breeds of cow. Jersey and Holstein Friesian is the foreign cow which is most preferred cow in Punjab among the farmers.
Khalsa Singh, a dairy farmer said, “Mostly farmers prefer to buy foreign cows as they are more productive and with long life span. The foreign cows are made through the local cows as this is called as cross breed which is commonly used to produce foreign cows.” “People should take care of the cows to increase their life span as mostly cows died due to low quality of food given to them. Limited food must give to the cows according to them as over eating also leads to their health problem,” Singh added.
