Patiala: The commuters faced a lot of harassment on Tuesday as agitated Safai Karamcharies of Punjabi University blocked Patiala-Chandigarh highway. Due to blockage vehicular traffic was diverted to alternate routes by police.
Keeping in view the road blockage, police in advance made adequate arrangements to ensure that commuters reach their destinations.
Safai Sewaks of Punjabi University resorted to jamming of road after their two companion’s were attacked by rival union led by its president Gurinder Pal Singh Babbi.
In the attack two university employees were seriously injured and taken to Government Rajindra Hospital for medical treatrment.
Police swung into action and registered an FIR under Sections 307, 323, 506, 148, 149 of IPC against Gurinder Pal Singh Babbi, Avtar Singh, Gurmeet Singh Mitta, Mandeep Singh and 14-15 other unidentified persons at Urban Estate Police Station. The case has been registered on the complaint of one of the injured Jatinder Singh.
Police tied to maintain law and order and security was beefed up in and around the university. Superintendent of Police (City), Daljit Singh Rana led the force from front and held a discussion with rival groups.
Protesting Safai Sewak’s raised slogans against university authorities and demanded immediate sacking of Babbi and other university employees involved in the attack. They even threatened to intensify the agitation in case authorities fail to take action against the attackers. Keeping a tab on situation Punjabi University authorities in the morning decided to postpone function to mark ‘MAKA Trophy’ won by University to September 1.
Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh received prestigios MAKA Trophy from the President of India in New Delhi. SP (City) , Daljit Singh Rana played a major role in get solving this issue as he brought agitated group as well as university authorities across the table. After much hue and cry university formed a four member panel to take action over it and SP (city)gave an assurance letter to protesters.
As a result agitating employees lifted the blockade and vehicular traffic was resumed. Registrar of University , Prof Devinder Singh objected to the presence of media in senate hall and were asked to go out of the hall.Prof Singh got annoyed as his name was mentioned wrong in one of the newspapers.
