Ludhiana: To overcome the problem of environmental degradation and corrosion of tracks due to night soil, which has been engaging the attention of the railways for a long time, the railway came out with the solution of having ‘Green Toilets’ in train coaches. The Indian Railways was supposed to implement this proposal fully by 2017, but now they have extended its deadline till 2019 in the Railway Budget 2017 presented by the Finance Minister, Arun Jaitely.
Though, its work started on the project five years ago but still its under the process only. As the rail decomposition costs railways more than 350 crore every year so the Indian railways are trying for an alternative. Kakodar and Pitroda Committees, the railway modernisation said that there is an urgent need to replace conventional open-discharge toilets with ‘Green Toilets’ in order to provide cleaner, hygienic and safer railway eco-system. As the railway tracks remain the most unhygienic with the heaps of garbage dump and waste falls on railway tracks.
The Divisional Railway Manager, Ferozepur Division, Anuj Prakash, said that this project is in the process of testing and by next year, practically this would come on to floor for the passengers. He said that complete switch over to bio-toilets in coaches of common trains will be carried out by 2019 at the railway stations of India including Ludhiana Railway Station.
He further informed that based on the pilot project experience, which would start in the next two months , it would be introduced in the trains of India mainly the prestigious train like Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express.
Harsh Singh, a professional said, “Due to the disposal of waste on railway tracks, it creates unhygienic atmosphere and produces stinking smell to make passengers feel difficult to stand on the platform of the station to wait for their trains.
The concept of Green Toilets would solve half of the problems in making railways hygienic and Eco-friendly place. It should be tested and implemented as soon as possible.”
