Ludhiana: Due to the shortage of the Assistant drivers from the past few years and non-installation of anti collision devices by railway authorities was reason behind railway accidents, which took place in past of railways in different parts of India.
As the duty of the Assistant drivers is to provide a helping hand to main driver of train as in case main fell ill or face any problem on way than assistant driver takes over the charge. Moreover, they need to keep a tab on surroundings and proper vigil over the track in order to avoid any accidents in the case if driver fail to see anything on the track while driving.
But from the past few years’ railways is not making any recruitment of them have the plans to abolish this post, which will make the situation, worsen.
Even National Level Convention was organised a year ago by the All India Loco-Running Staff Association at Loco Complex in Ludhiana under aegis of Northern Railway Men’s Union, in which this problem was discussed at large. Moreover they raised voice against the step motherly treatment of the government especially railway Ministry with the drivers of the train.
As they rues, “The railways take 12-16 hours work from a driver in one shift duty and in return pays them the least. Moreover in last certain years their duty becomes even harder as they don’t have any helpers with them, which has raised the number of accidents due to poor vigilance or judgments.”
“ Upon it railway is thinking of erasing the post of guards too which would create havoc in the life of drivers as they are already overburden and in the sixth pay commission they have not being given much profits. I think government must pay them more and should provide helpers to them. Idea of removing guards should be kept under consideration,” added he.
The Divisional Secretary, NRMU, Daljit Singh said that he is also against the proposal of abolishment of assistants drivers post from railways over the last one decade and showed concern over decreasing number of assistant drivers in the train from the past few years.
He added they are fighting with the higher authorities.
The Divisional Railway Manager, Ferozepur Division, Anuj Parkash said that the proposal regarding it is already with higher authorities but no decision taken yet.
