Ludhiana: Punjab Education Minister, Dr Daljit Singh Cheema on Friday said that to check accidents related to school vehicles, an awareness drive, in association with private schools, would be started by the state Education Department.
While speaking to media persons during the inauguration of the 36th National Junior Taekwondo Championship, Dr Cheema added under this drive, the private school owners as well as vehicle drivers would be given training about traffic rules as well as the Safe School Vahan Scheme.
Dr Cheema termed the road accident which led to the death of school children in Amritsar district as very unfortunate. He said that to make sure no such incidents take place in future also, the Education Department would be starting an awareness campaign soon. He said that due to foggy days ahead, the school vehicles might face difficulties on roads, so the department has decided to start an awareness programme in collaboration with the private school owners for educating the vehicle drivers. He said that the safety of students is the first responsibility of the school owners.
While speaking about the initiatives of the Punjab government regarding sports, he said that the SAD-BJP-led state government has spent around Rs.200 crore for strengthening our sports infrastructure. He said that a special fund has been started for sports, under which Rs.90 crore are being spent annually. He informed that for providing government jobs to sportspersons winning laurels on international level, the Punjab government has formed a new policy as well.
He said that for promoting Hockey, ultra modern stadiums have been set up at Mohali, Bathinda, Faridkot, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. Dr Cheema stated that by spending Rs 60 crore, 10 multipurpose sports stadiums have been set up in Punjab and several sportspersons bringing laurels to the state have been awarded with cash prizes. He said that Punjab is now amongst the top states in the country in terms of sports.
He said that for promoting sports culture in the state, the Punjab government has started several initiatives. He said that our mother sport Kabaddi is now amongst the grading sports and a world class and state of the art, Punjab State Institute of Sports is being set up. He said that its headquarter would be at Mohali and centre of excellence for some sports would also be set up here. He said that the main aim of these would be developing a pool of world class sportspersons of different sports so that they could be trained for international events. He said that these sportspersons would stay in good hostels and would be allowed to study in educational institutions of their own choice.
Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said that for the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections, the SAD-BJP combine does not have any “real” political opponent and instead it is working hard to increase the number of winning seats as well as the vote share. He said that the coalition would form the government for the third time in a row that would speed up the ongoing development in Punjab.
On a question related to the future of AAP leaders, Dr Cheema said that they are regularly being accused of indulging in various criminal incidents and day is not far when this party would be completely wiped out from the poll scene well before the elections. He also announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh to the Punjab Taekwondo Federation from his discretionary funds.
Prominent among those present on the occasion included Punjab Taekwando Federation President and MLA Mantar Singh Brar, DEO (Secondary) Paramjit Kaur Chahal, besides several others.
