Jalandhar: Two-days after the announcement of ticket to former MLA Sarabjit Singh Makkar from Jalandhar Cantonment seat, SAD Jalandhar (Urban) President Gurcharan Singh Channi on Friday opened front against him refusing to campaign in his favour.
Channi was not only vocal against the candidature of Makkar but also constituted a nine-member committee to oppose his candidature from Jalandhar Cantonment seat.
Earlier it was Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Paramjit Singh Raipur and his brother Jaspal Singh Dhesi who were opposing Makkar’s name now Channi too joined their bandwagon. The SAD leaders within the party were also not much enthusiastic over the candidature of Makkar from this seat, it was learnt.
Notably, Channi too was eyeing Jalandhar Cantonment seat and the sudden announcement of Makkar’s name left him agitated. Sources maintained that Channi was going to meet SAD top brass and expressed his displeasure. It was learnt that after conveying his message, he might quit the party.
It was learnt that Channi claimed that Makkar was an outsider in Jalandhar Cantonment, as he was serving Kapurthala constituency for the last over five years.
Currently, Channi, who is also Chairperson of District Planning Committee and president of SAD Traders Wing (Doaba) was looking after the party’s work at SAD Headquarters in Chandigarh. However, on Friday, Channi came back to Jalandhar as a mark of protest.
It is pertinent to mention here that Jalandhar Cantonment seat has fallen vacant after Olympian and ex-SAD MLA Pargat Singh resigned from the party over confrontation on Solid Waste Management project at Jamsher village with the SAD top brass.
