Ludhiana: Despite the assurance by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh to set up a regulatory committee in connection with fee hike by private schools, the ongoing strike by parents of private school children is continuing in the city. On Monday too, a group of parents staged a protest outside the Ryan International School on the Chandigarh Road.
Parents alleged that the school authorities were seeking to charge excess fee from them while Deputy Commissioner Ravi Bhagat had issued clear directions to the private school authorities prohibiting them from overcharging fees.
Notably, a meeting was held between the parents associations and the DC recently after a number of protests staged by parents outside various private schools in the city. After this meeting, the DC had issued orders that schools would not be allowed to charge hike in the development funds and if they have already charged a hike, they would have to refund the same.
According to the DC’s directions, the development fund is supposed to be decreased by 30 per cent. The schools are allowed to prefer NCERT books only and in case there is any change in the title and publisher of the books then school authorities would have to mention it on the notice board of the school as well as in their official website. Same is the case with school uniform as schools have to display the colour and design of the uniforms on the notice board as well as on their website and the parents can purchase the books and uniform from any shop of their choice.
However parents alleged that contrary to this, authorities of Ryan International were seeking development fees and even the parents were told to purchase books from a particular shop. The parents informed that they had spoken to the school principal who refused to have any information about the orders from DC. They claimed when they showed the DC’s order to the principal, the latter refused to follow the same. At this the parents said they would bring orders in writing from the DC by Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the parents also staged protest outside the DC office while claiming that even administration was not making efforts to keep check on the private schools and nothing was being done to get the orders of the deputy commissioner implemented.
