Patiala: Punjabi University will approach the Ministry of Human Resource Development and University Grants Commission and make utmost efforts for approval to introduce Gurmat Sangeet (Sikh divine music) as a subject on a large scale across the country looking at vastness of its scope and dimensions.” This was stated by Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, in his presidential address on the occasion of a two-day seminar on “Gurmat Sangeet: Achievements and Possibilities”, organised by the University’s Gurmat Sangeet Chair in collaboration with Jawadi Kalan Taksal in the University’s kala bhawan here on Thursday.
He talked about the importance, observation and deep interest shown by the former President Abdul Kalam Azad and Rabindra Nath Tagore in his autobiography in Gurmat Sangeet, describing it unparalleled as a form of divine music after knowing its content, entirely based on classical ‘ragas’.
While talking about the achievements and possibilities of the Gurmat Sangeet Chair and Gurmat Sangeet Department, their head and Dean, Academic Affairs, Dr Gurnam Singh said that Tagore has described Gurmat Sangeet even higher in value as compared to Rabindra Sangeet. He said that the celebration of Rababi Bhai Mardana Sangeet Utsav, every year was a step in the direction of bringing it at par with Harvallabh Sangeet Sammelan.
