Ludhiana: To provide relief to the traders, a special goods train is going to start from the Ludhiana Railway Station by next year. The new goods train was expected to run by now from Ludhiana but due to delay of laying down the special track for the freight corridor on Ludhiana-New-Delhi-Kolkata route, it has been delayed from last four years.
The Station Superintendent, Ludhiana, Ashok Salaria said that the new train would just carry hosiery goods from the Manchester of India, Ludhiana. He said that a special freight corridor, which would run on new special line between Ludhiana-New Delhi to Kolkata at a speed of 130 kmps would be made by railways. It is being delayed due to non-competition of the few stretches and would take at least one more year to complete the process at different places.
He said that with this train not only goods of hosiery owners would reach on time and in large quantity, also even the passengers of Ludhiana would be benefited. Till date no construction of the remaining patches of third track has been started to run Ludhiana-New Delhi to Kolkata freight corridor due to some technical problems. He further informed that within next one month work is expected to start and by next summer’s it is expected to run from the Ludhiana station.
“Every year we have to face many hardships and our goods remain stranded for several weeks at the railway station in the season due to heavy rush, which bring losses to both the railways and hosiery workers of worth lakh of rupees”, said Vikas Sharma, a hosiery trader. He further added, “We have to opt for the road transportation when our goods remain stranded for a long time.”
Another hosiery trader Harjeet Singh said, “The Freight Corridor would be a boon if railway gets successful in starting it from hub of hosiery industry to Kolkata but it will take a lot of time.”
