Ludhiana: Specially abled stuntmen claimed that they are totally dependent upon the festivals like Rural Olympics to generate income to run his family by giving amazing performances. Besides bullock cart, the stunts performed by these handicapped persons are another big attraction of Kila Raipur Sports Festival.
Encircled by so many people at the Kila Raipur Sports Festival, a 40 year-old Gurmail Singh, who could not walk because of his disabled limbs but even then his spirit is great and has got a big round of applause as when balanced his body on a glass bottle for a minute.
Gurmail Singh of Badhni Khurd in Moga has been visiting Kila Raipur from last 20 years where he was awarded with little amount for showing his stunts but his photos performing stunts go viral across the world. The foreigners, who came to attend the Kila Raipur games, were amazed to watch such an amazing stunt by the disabled persons.
Singh himself claimed that he is 60 percent disabled. He further said that sometimes, few of the spectators gave prize money of Rs. 100-200 to him from their own pockets. He was thankful for organising such events where he can show his talent and get a chance to earn some money. Gurmails’ wife is also handicapped while both of them are concerned for their seven year old son. He said that the government should take steps to support them as they are only dependent on such fairs.
Similarly, like Gurmail Singh, many of the handicapped persons belonging to weaker section of the society used to visit Kila Raipur Games where they become star attraction of the games as International media and foreigners also give them coverage.
Another example is of 45 year-old Dharam Singh, a handicapped hails from Panchkula district in Haryana. He lifted 50 kg weight with his teeth at Kila Raipur games. He also appealed to government to pay attention towards them. he himself claimed that he is 40% disable.
Some handicapped lie down under the tractors to perform stunts while some jump through fire to entertain the spectators including foreigners. A prize of Rs. 1000-1500 is generally awarded by the organisers to each handicapped for performing such stunts but these are not enough to run their family.
