Amritsar: Prof Laxmi Kanta Chawla, Punjab’s ex- health minister and veteran leader has asked the police department and the district administrative officials to stop harassing the traders and general public of the holy city in the wake of visits of VIPs which has become order of the day these days. In a press release, Chawla stated that since the general assembly elections in the state are drawing near, hence, in order to register their supremacy over their rivals, leaders of almost every political party have been making a “beeline” to the holy city.
May it be a state level function in the memory of some dignitary, an occasion of some inauguration or an appearance in some court case or otherwise, heavy security police force is deployed upon the main leading roads within as well as outside the city.” Since the roads and bazaars are blocked for general public, it leaves thousands people stranded on one side of the road in order to make safe passage for the convoy of that VIP. Only after the VIP along with his accomplices is able to get through, the general public is given a go-bye”, said Chawla who also added that all this leads to traffic chaos upon other roads because the vehicular traffic of the blocked roads has to take route of other roads.
The former state minister stated that during the past fortnight, the holy city witnessed as many as four visits of Punjab chief minister, deputy chief minister, union finance minister, Arun Jaitley, Union minister of state, Vijay Sampla and Delhi chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal.
