Ludhiana: Street vendors are requesting and hoping from upcoming government for setting-up of vending zones in city.
Importantly, vendors have claimed that there is urgent need of (Town Vending Committee) TVC as this is the first process of making vending zone as scheme has been made by the government but there is no implementation by the authorities.
To ensure, the implementation of the Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending Act 2014, the MC has been conducting meetings and discussions for last two years but to no avail.
Despite their repeated demands, the vending zones where the vendors can legally do their business have not been settled till date. The survey of street vendors for settling up of vending zones was hanging in fire despite the tenders were floated multiple times in last six months to invite a firm to conduct this survey.
One of the street vendors claimed that they are requesting and demanding the authorities from past several years but still in vain. He claimed that they want from new government to ensure setting up of vending zone in each ward of Municipal Corporation so that we can run our business without any obstruction. Once, the new government is formed by any political party, we are hopeful that it will take required steps to set-up vending zones at the earliest.
Tiger Singh, president of Rehri Phari Federation said, “In absence of vending zones, the vendors are forced to station their carts either on roads and public places by raising encroachments. The street vendors have been demanding to set-up vending zones for last one decade but it is yet to be completed. Ahead of elections, the various political parties assured for set-up of vending zones and whenever any government is formed our demands should be fulfilled”
Despite repeated attempts, concerned authorities were not available for comments.
