Ludhiana: In a research (2014-2016) done by the experts of Forties Hospital, there are around 950 patients, all of them of age group 11-16 years were suffering from examination stress, depression, anger outburst, loss of appetite, anxiety etc. The patients basically belong from Ludhiana, Moga, Khanna, Ferozepur belt.
Dr. Ajaypal Sandhu (Consultant Psychiatry) said, “Maximum patients of examination stress mainly came in the months September till May, when the final examinations were approaching. Children would became very angry and talk loudly to the parents and constantly thinking that they were a failure in their life and examination failure would result in punishment and parents getting very angry at them. It was seen that most of the students had a schedule where they got up early in the morning and went to school till afternoon. This was followed by tuition classes.”
There was no exercise or leisure time in the schedule. The diet also was not healthy in the students as they were skipping breakfast in the morning and generally were tired and unable to pay attention to the studies by noon.
Experts also claimed, “Lot of the students had depression and suicidal ideas. The parents were constantly telling them to study more and get good marks. Lot of children towards the finals felt like missing the examination as they thought their studies were not up to the expectations of their parents and teachers. A few of the students when they expressed their suicidal thoughts to the parents were not taken seriously and were suspected of being dramatic to avoid studies.”
It was seen that some parents bringing the children to the clinic to ask for memory pills to increase their performance in exams. “They took pills of intelligence enhancing from quacks, when I explained that such tablets did not exist in scientific medicine”, he said.
About 10% of these children had serious suicidal thoughts and had to be given medication. Counselling of parents and children was the foundation of the treatment of these children.
Father of a student on requesting anonymity said, “The kids now-a-days are least interested in studies. They are more indulged in increasing their stress in useless tasks by wasting their time and during final Exams, they are found stressed. So they should be serious towards studies from the very first day of session, which will help them to score good marks.”
