Nawanshahr: Normal life was disrupted in the town on Friday following nationwide strike call given by various Trade Unions to protest against the ‘anti-labour’ policies of the Centre, including low wages, disinvestment in public sector and foreign direct investment in the Railways, Defence and Insurance sectors.
Essential services including telecom, transport and banking were hit across the district. The commuters had to face great hardships in the town as activists of Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) blocked traffic for over three hours at the Chandigarh Chowk and those owing affiliation to CITU and AITUC held dharna for nearly one hour at the Ambedkar Chowk.
“Anti-labour policies of the Centre and state governments” came in for severe criticism at the hands of speakers at these rallies. The speakers maintained that the labour laws were being amended in favour of big corporate houses at the cost of marginalised sections of the society. IFTU state president Kulwinder Wurraich and state president of Democratic Employees Federation Bhupinder Singh were among those who addressed the protesters at Chandigarh Chowk. At Ambedkar Chowk, AITUC district convener Swatantra Kumar and senior leader Basant Lal and CITU leaders including Raghunath Singh, Balbir Jadla, Prem Rakkar and Maha Singh Rouri addressed the protesters.
Demands of state government employees were also raised during these rallies. Activists of Democratic Teachers Front under their district president Balbir Kumar at a meeting held on Friday at JSFH Khalsa Senior Secondary school decided to hold a dharna at district level on September 5 in support of the demands of teachers including restoration of ACP scheme and early release of state pay commission’s report.
Reports said the Telecom employees reportedly observed complete strike across the district, while transport employees kept their buses off roads from 10 am to 2 pm.
