Jalandhar: A UK based NRI Jaspal Singh Dhesi, who is the elder brother of SGPC member Paramjit Singh Raipur on Wednesday held a show of strength in Jamsher village in cantonment, hence staking claim from SAD.
Raipur was a previous SAD ticket aspirant from Jalandhar Cantonment seat. However on Wednesday, he held a show of strength in favour of his brother, who has already put up hoardings in the constituency to claim his stake in the seat.
While Dhesi was an NRI, his brother Raipur was a known face and name in the Jalandhar Cantonment segment. Raipur had twice applied for ticket in the 2007 and 2012 assembly elections.
Jaspal Singh Dhesi has also remained the president of a gurdwara in England (UK) for close to decade and a half. Dhesi held a meeting with the villagers on the burning issue of Solid Waste Management plant in Jamsher, where he assured those present that the plant would not come up. “We would take up the matter with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and appeal him to hold a sangat darshan in the area”, he said.
Though the SAD party high command has reportedly given the green signal to YAD Doaba Zone chief Sarabjot Singh Sabi to begin political activities from Jalandhar Candidate but the issue of ‘outsiders’ landing in this segment was gaining momentum with every passing day.
As Sabi hails from Hoshiarpur district, the issue of ‘outsider’ was being raked up by the locals.
It was learnt that people were against the fact that every time outsiders were fielded, they left the constituency midway. Former SAD MLA Olympian Pargat Singh contested in 2012 but left the constituency in protest against the solid waste management project.
Similarly, the Jagbir Brar also contested on SAD ticket and won but left the party midway to join PPP first and finally landed with congress. He got a ticket from congress on Jalandhar Cantonment seat but he lost it to Pargat Singh.
