Ludhiana : Residents and commuters are harried lot due to large number of unauthorized autos in the city. Due to reckless driving and abrupt stoppages of these autos, several accidents take place regularly.
There are several busy points of the city where the traffic bottleneck takes place often due to heavy number of autos at all the places. The busy places in the city including Bharat Nagar Chowk, Jalandhar bye pass, old city, Gill road, Aarti Chowk, Bus stand and Dholewal Chowk among others.
The illegal practice is flourishing right under the nose of the traffic cops and transport authorities who are wary to take any stern action to deter the malpractice.
Moreover, autorickshaw drivers use to stop their vehicle anytime on the road due to which people have to face several problems. Drivers also stopped their vehicles at the middle of the road only to catch the customers. Due to these abruptions traffic jam take place. Many of the people fought with these drivers due to their reckless driving and rude behavior.
Many of the times, auto rickshaw drivers use to take several passengers against the number of seats in the vehicle. This is the high level of risk for the life of passengers but no check has been taken by the department concerned. People are forced to use autorickshaw transport facility due to few local city buses running in the city. According to the commuters these autos are also not safe due to bad behavior of the drivers against the women.
Traffic snarls take place regularly in old city due to large number of autos. If the person has to cross that area, he needs minimum 10 minutes more due to auto menace all around. As per the transport norms, autorickshaws are permitted to carry passengers inside the municipal corporation limits which are the four octroi posts at the periphery of the city; Barewal Awana, Dhandari, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Gill Road and Hotel Amaltas on Jalandhar Road.
Residents are appealing to the authorities to take required action against these unauthorized autorickshaw so that people should not suffer from regular accidents and traffic snarls. Autos are another reason for increasing pollution level in the city.
District transport Officer Dalwinderjit Singh said, “Mostly small vehicles challans are being issued by police department. Moreover we have also issued the challans few months back”.
