Ludhiana: Despite the ban imposed on loose cigarettes by Health Department on January 8, 2015, vendors are still indulging into its sale across the city and that too, without any kind of fear.
There is a growing demand that the authorities concerned should take strict action against erring vendors to ensure the implementation of the government order.
The Punjab government had notified the ban on sale of loose cigarettes on January 8, 2015. It stated the sale of loose cigarettes and loose tobacco violated Section 7 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, which says no tobacco product, be sold without pictorial warning about its health consequences. Contrary to it, loose cigarettes are easily available in every nook and corner of the city.
The ban was on the sale of loose cigarettes was imposed by Punjab government for ensuring the health of the people.
The situation is so worse in the city that even teenagers are having an easy access to tobacco products and cigarettes as these are available normally from the cigarette and tobacco vendors.
Jagjot Singh, a resident of Model Town said, “Health department has taken the good initiative by imposing a ban on selling of loose cigarettes but failed to implement the ban as most of the vendors are opening violating the order.”
Adding, Singh said large numbers of the youths are indulging into drugs day-by-day. “I have also observed many a times school indulging into smoking, therefore, the authorities should implement the order in true spirit.” He suggested that the health department should set age limit of buying these products to discourage use of tobacco products by the youngsters.
Mohinder Singh, Assistant Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, on being contact, said he is aware of the ban. “We are regularly issuing challans to the violators”, he revealed.
